Utah Mammoth prospect Gabe Smith helped the Moncton Wildcats capture the QMJHL Championship on Monday night. It marks the third time the organization has won the Gilles-Courteau Trophy.
The Wildcats won 4-2, powered by two goals from Smith, who now shifts his focus to the Memorial Cup in hopes of capturing the CHL's top prize.
Moncton will face the OHL champion London Knights, WHL champion Medicine Hat Tigers, and the host team—the QMJHL runner-up Rimouski Océanic.
Smith had an impressive postseason, putting up six goals and 16 assists in 19 games. He recorded at least one point in 16 of those 19 games, including five multi-point efforts and two multi-goal performances. He finished tied for third in playoff scoring.
It’s been a strong bounce-back for Smith after a regular season where he posted just 39 points in 52 games. The Wildcats needed him to elevate his game—and that’s exactly what he did.
Smith was selected by the Mammoth in the fourth round of the 2024 NHL Draft.
