Welcome to a new series, where I'll be taking a look at some of the biggest name players who are pending UFAs and determine if the Utah Mammoth should pursue them or not.

Today, we start with the biggest fish this summer, from the Toronto Maple Leafs Mitch Marner.

Target: Mitch Marner – RW – 9 Years Experience

As mentioned above, Marner is by far the biggest fish on the market this summer and every team in the NHL would want the opportunity to sign him. Regardless of his playoff struggles, he’s still an elite player in this league and there will be zero hesitation from teams when it comes to locking him up long-term.

With the Utah Mammoth reportedly looking to spend big this off-season, it makes a ton of sense for them to push to sign Marner if he becomes available.

Let’s take a closer look at the 28-year-old.

    Stats

This season was the best of his career. In 81 games, he scored 27 goals and 75 assists for 102 points. That set a career-high in both assists and points, and he finished just eight goals shy of a new career-high in that category too.

In his nine-year career, he’s played in 657 games and has recorded 221 goals and 520 assists for 741 points.

    Salary

Marner is currently in the final year of an eight-year deal he signed back in 2019. The deal carries an AAV of $10.9 million, which is expected to climb with his next contract. Right now, many contract projections have him landing a seven-year deal worth somewhere around $13 million per season.

    Chances of him Signing: 7/10

Personally, I think the Maple Leafs will do everything they can to keep him. But no one really knows what Marner or his camp are thinking. He might want to test the market and see what kind of offers come his way. If he does that, Utah will almost certainly be one of the most aggressive teams involved.

They’ve got the cap space and financial backing to go a little above the $13 million mark if that’s what it takes. On top of that, they’re a brand-new market looking to make a splash. That might appeal to Marner, especially with Utah trending toward being a playoff team as early as next season.

Wherever Marner lands, he’s going to be a 100-point player. He’s proven to be an elite winger, and if he hits the open market, Utah will be right there at the front of the line.
