ow that the majority of big-name players have been signed, there are going to be stories about which team was in on which players. For the Utah Mammoth, the story that came out late last night from RG Media was that they were prepared to outbid all the other teams interested in Brad Marchand.
Of course, this didn’t come to be, as the Florida Panthers managed to re-sign him before the market opened. So, Utah never got the chance to make a bid at the future hall-of-famer.
In the RG Media article, James Murphy mention that an NHL source shared some info regarding Utah’s offer.
“Utah was ready to beat any offer for Marchand,” an NHL source told RG on Tuesday night. “I was told $9.5–10 million cap hit per season. I know Marchand was starting at four years with the Panthers and planned to do the same if he hit the market. So, it had to be at least that if he got there.”
It was reported earlier this offseason that the Mammoth were gearing up to spend big this summer, and there were numerous players that were named. Unfortunately, like so many other teams, that idea of signing a top free agent or two was cut short after they nearly all re-signed with their respective teams on June 30.
There is still a slight chance that Utah does try and land Nikolaj Ehlers. However, I personally believe that race is narrowed down to the Carolina Hurricanes, Washington Capitals, and Winnipeg Jets.
It will be interesting to see what happens next with the Mammoth. However, some NHL sources feel Utah could be trying to make a splash on the trade market in the near future.
