The Utah Mammoth have announced that they have signed defenseman Nate Schmidt to a three-year $10.5 million deal. The contract carries an average annual value of $3.5 million per season.
Schmidt, 33, signed a league minimum contract with the Florida Panthers after being bought out by the Winnipeg Jets. In 80 games with the Panthers, he had five goals and 14 assists for 19 points.
Schmidt had an interesting year. After being bought out by the Jets, not many had him earning a contract like this. He worked hard and went on to win the Stanley Cup with the Panthers, and now has earned a new contract with a Utah team that is looking to make the playoffs for the first time in their franchise history.
Schmidt adds to an already deep blue line, which now has seven NHL-level defensemen on it.
After signing Schmidt, Utah now has $11.6 million left in available cap space.
