Welcome to the first edition of Utah Mammoth News & Notes, where I'll be covering all the news and rumors surrounding the Mammoth.

With the offseason now in full swing and the 2025 NHL Draft right around the corner, there’s no shortage of buzz around the Mammoth. From trade speculation to free agent chatter, lineup projections to prospect development, there’s a lot happening, and I’ll be here each week to break it all down and keep you updated.

This news and notes series is all about keeping you in the loop. From trade buzz to roster moves to the names quietly gaining traction behind the scenes, this is where I’ll break down everything worth knowing as the Mammoth gear up for a big second season in Utah. So buckle up because things are moving quickly in Utah, and we’re just getting started. Let’s get into it.

Marner the Newest Star in Utah?

First up, Mitch Marner has reportedly made up his mind regarding his future with the Toronto Maple Leafs. According to Andy Strickland, Marner is heading to free agency and will play for a new team next season. There has been plenty of speculation that this could have been the case since the Maple Leafs were eliminated from the playoffs. However, there still was some hope amongst people in the Maple Leafs' fan base that the two sides would be able to reach an agreement.

This news should spark a ton of rumors about where he’ll be playing next season, and it wouldn't be surprising if Utah is one of the teams that are linked to him. It makes a ton of sense, relatively new team, fresh identity, looking to make a splash by adding a marquee star. They have the cap space to sign him, and they need a big name to elevate their roster and market profile. So keep an eye on Utah being a legitimate front-runner for Marner in the weeks ahead.

Utah Really, Really Liked Brady Martin

As I reported earlier this past week, the Mammoth really liked Brady Martin at the 2025 NHL Combine. If they don't opt to trade their fourth overall pick, there's a fairly good chance that they look to draft him. This may involve them trading down and grabbing another asset with teams in the 7–9 range. The Boston Bruins, Seattle Kraken, and Buffalo Sabres are all teams that Utah could look to trade with in order to select Martin. Obviously, there’s the potential that they just pick him with the fourth overall pick and throw a wrench into the projected draft order.

Martin checks a lot of boxes for the Mammoth. He would be a power-forward type player for them, and while he isn't the biggest player in the draft, he plays a heavy game and brings that edge the team could use. He battles hard, has offensive upside, and would fit very well within the Mammoth’s top-six down the road. If they think he’s their guy, expect them to find a way to make it happen — even if it’s a little off the board.

Utah Should Consider Trading Down To Draft Brady Martin Utah Should Consider Trading Down To Draft Brady Martin There has been a ton of speculation that the Mammoth could be looking to deal their pick. Which could still happen. Especially with the news this weekend that they really liked Brady Martin, they should consider trading down to draft him if they like him that much.

Could Utah Be Preparing to Pull Off a Huge Trade at the Draft?

This time of year there are a ton of rumors, and often it’s hard to pick through which ones are legit and which ones are just smoke. But when it comes to Utah potentially preparing to pull off a big trade at the draft one that could involve their first-round pick, that’s one I think has some truth to it. If we go back to the 2024 NHL Draft, they made a huge splash with the acquisition of Mikhail Sergachev. There’s a real sense that they could be looking to do something bold again this year.

A name that could be a great fit for them is Jason Robertson of the Dallas Stars. He’s reportedly available, and Utah could have the right mix of assets to get something done. At this point, no one truly knows what Dallas is asking for, but it’s safe to assume it’ll be steep. A deal could mean parting with someone like Barrett Hayton or Nick Schmaltz to make the money and value work. But if Utah wants a 40-goal scorer who can be a game-breaker in the top six, they’ll have to pay the price and that’s exactly the type of swing they’ve shown they’re willing to take.

With the NHL Draft only two weeks away and free agency opening on July 1, we’re officially entering silly season. There’s going to be a lot of chatter, a lot of speculation, and probably a few surprises too. This is like the lead-up to Christmas for people around the league, which means it's going to get chaotic. But don’t worry, I’ll have you covered right here each week. 3 Free Agent Targets For The Utah Mammoth 3 Free Agent Targets For The Utah Mammoth With all the speculation surrounding the Utah Mammoth and how active they are going to be this offseason, it got me thinking. Who are some free agents that they would actually target? With $21 million in cap space and some players they can move out to clear more, they have the ability to do a few things this summer to drastically change their team. Utah Mammoth Should Extend Jack McBain Before Free Agency Starts Utah Mammoth Should Extend Jack McBain Before Free Agency Starts The Utah Mammoth have plenty of questions that need answering, including whether they should re-sign restricted free agent Jack McBain or leave him unqualified.
