The Utah Mammoth have plenty of questions that need answering, including whether they should re-sign restricted free agent Jack McBain or leave him unqualified.
In my opinion, I think they should re-sign him, no question. He does a lot of the little things right, including defend his teammates and throw his weight around. It is safe to assume that Utah will qualify him if they can't agree to a contract before free agency starts.
He will be an offer-sheet target by at least a dozen NHL teams, he brings good size and depth to any NHL's teams bottom six. Which should put some pressure on the Mammoth to try and get him locked up before he can even speak to other teams.
His projected contract according to CapWages.com has him signing in the neighbourhood of $3 million over three years. That contract is something that Utah can easily afford and should be looking to get done as soon as possible.
If he does happen to hit the open market and signs an offer sheet for that projected contract and the Mammoth don't decide to match it. They will receive a second round draft pick as compensation.
As per the NHL offer sheet compensation, anything over $2,340,037 to $4,680,076 will result in the NHL team that doesn't match the offer sheet getting a second round pick in the 2026 NHL draft.
Ideally, the Mammoth would get this deal done and off their minds so they can turn their attention free agents that they can sign.
