Welcome to another edition of Utah Mammoth News & Notes, where I'll be covering all the news and rumors surrounding the Mammoth.

The off-season is rolling, and with the 2025 NHL Draft quickly approaching, there’s plenty of excitement building around the Mammoth. Whether it’s trade rumours, free agent talk, lineup possibilities, or prospect news, there’s a lot to keep an eye on. I’ll be here every week to cover it all and keep you in the loop.

This news and notes series is all about keeping you up to date. From trade buzz to roster moves to the names quietly gaining traction behind the scenes, this is where I’ll break down everything worth knowing as the Mammoth gear up for a big second season in Utah. So buckle up because things are moving quickly in Utah, and we’re just getting started. Let’s get into it.

Utah Still Open to Trading Fourth Overall Pick

According to David Pagnotta of the Fourth Period, the Mammoth are still open to trading their fourth overall pick. If they did part with the pick, it would need to be a significant deal, however, it is something that they are open to. While Pagnotta never mentioned what Utah was looking to get back in a deal for their first round pick, it would be safe to assume, if it meant getting someone like Jason Robertson who could help them now they would agree to it.

There is also the scenario, where they would consider trading down in the draft to select Brady Martin and could try and get something else added to the deal to sweeten the pot. Martin is someone that they really like so if they can ensure he won't be picked until closer to 10, they could field trade calls on swapping picks in the first round.

    Mammoth are Shopping Maccelli

As I reported earlier this week, the Mammoth are actively shopping Matias Maccelli. This shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone, he was a healthy scratch a lot this season and with his $3.4 million cap hit and one year remaining, both sides would benefit from a change. At this time, there hasn't been a ton of names linked to him, but with his cap hit being lower and him being only 24 years old, there will be teams that take a flyer on him and call Utah.

Utah is preparing to make some big moves this off-season and can benefit from having all available cap space. If they can clear Maccelli's $3.4 million cap hit, it would open the door to spend more and potentially even have up to $3 million more to outbid a team for one of the top free agents on the market. There is hope that Utah can get this deal down at the NHL Draft on June 27th, or before the market opens on July 1, so they can have that extra bit of Money to work with. In terms of a return for Maccelli, it likely would be for an extra draft pick likely somewhere in that four-seventh round range, that will give Utah an additional pick in the draft either this year or next.

Utah Should Target This Tough Forward In Free Agency Utah Should Target This Tough Forward In Free Agency NHL free agency opens in just over two weeks, and with all the talk around the Utah Mammoth being linked to some big-name players, now feels like a good time to shift focus to some potential depth options. Low-risk, high-reward types that could help support the core throughout the season.

Bjugstad Looks to be Heading for Free Agency

It looks like veteran forward Nick Bjugstad is indeed heading to free agency. With only a bit over a week until the market opens, there has been no reports suggesting that they are looking to extend him. In fact, according to Pagnotta, he thinks that they will let him walk and look at other options too fill the void. There are internal options that they could look at, but also find someone on a cheap league minimum deal that can step into Bjugstad's role and produce 15-20 points.

When Bjugstad does hit the open market, it will be bittersweet, he has been a long-time Arizona Coyote/Utah Mammoth player, who could have spent the rest of his career there. Unfortunately, it's a business and with his production taking a massive dip and his asking price higher than $1.5 million, the Mammoth may need to pivot and find another bottom-six player.

With the NHL Draft now less than a week away and free agency around the corner, there will be changes made. Utah has been in the middle of a lot of news and rumors and because of that, it will make the off-season very fun. Multiple trusted insiders have gone on record stating that Utah is the team to watch. They have the cap space and a very smart GM in Bill Armstrong that is steering the ship, so things will only get better as we go further and further into this week.

The next time this rumour column will be released, the draft will have already come and gone, so if you miss anything, I’ll have you covered right here. Be sure to bookmark the page and check back often for your catch-all source for everything regarding the Mammoth.
