It was a record-setting Sunday as the Vancouver Canucks defeated the Detroit Red Wings 5-4 in overtime. Jake DeBrusk scored a hat trick, including the overtime winner, while Pius Suter and Erik Brännström also found the back of the net in the victory. As for Kevin Lankinen, he stopped 27 of the 31 shots he faced to become the first goaltender in NHL history to start a season on the road with a record of 10-0-0.

On top of Lankinen's NHL record-setting win, the Canucks also celebrated a franchise record as Quinn Hughes passed Alex Edler to become Vancouver's all-time leader in assists by a defenceman. Hughes achieved the feat in the second period, when he recorded the second assist on DeBrusk's first power play goal. In 388 career games, Hughes now has 48 goals and 313 assists, while his 361 points rank 22nd in franchise history.

When asked post-game about Hughes' career so far, Head Coach Rick Tocchet said, "I think his family. You know, the pedigree there. His brothers, those guys play hockey 24/7. To me, it's their want to be better, their want to be elite and the way they work on their games."

Despite giving up a third-period lead, the Canucks were able to fight back and eventually win the game in overtime. Their stars stepped up massively today, with both Hughes and Elias Pettersson recording three assists. Even though it was an awkward start time, Vancouver once again found a way to collect two points and is now 10-2-0 away from Rogers Arena this season.

As for Jake DeBrusk, he had not just his best game with the Canucks, but one of the best of his career. On top of scoring a hat trick, he recorded an assist on the game-tying goal while playing a season-high 21:46. After a slow start, DeBrusk has caught fire lately and is now on pace for over 30 goals this season.

Post-game, DeBrusk spoke about his four-point night, saying, "Honestly, it was just another afternoon game. We just played one, but no, I didn't really feel that different. Obviously, when you get two goals that quick with time left, you always think you are getting that third. Over my career, it's been pretty elusive so nice to do it in overtime."

While this game wasn't a work of art by any stretch of the imagination, Vancouver once again found a way to win on the road without J.T. Miller, Filip Hronek or Thatcher Demko in the lineup. With 20 of a possible 24 points collected away from home so far on the road, they are building a valuable cushion which should help once their schedule becomes even tougher. Overall, it was another strong performance by the team, which improved their record on this six-game road trip to 4-1-0.

    Facts and Stats:

    - Jake DeBrusk records his third career four-point game

    - Elias Pettersson's 11th career 3+ assist game ties Toni Tanti, Andre Boudrias and Trevor Linden for the sixth most in franchise history

    - Quinn Hughes' 313 assists are tied with Mitch Marner for the fifth most in the NHL since Hughes' debut on March 28, 2019
