The Canucks had an interesting night from an analytics perspective. While they did lose the even-strength scoring chances battle 24-21, they did generate more even-strength high-danger scoring chances by a count of 9-6. Ultimately, Vancouver was able to control the flow of play for the final two periods, which is a major reason why they skated away with a victory.
The heatmap from this game shows that the Canucks did a good job forcing Colorado to shoot from distance. Thatcher Demko only faced four high-danger shots all game compared to 12 low-danger shots. While the Avalanche did get some chances, which included hitting a few posts, Vancouver's netminder was up to the task and was able to stop all 25 shots he faced.

Moving over to the Canucks best forward line, according to the analytics, that was the trio of Nils Höglander, Teddy Blueger and Linus Karlsson. During their 7:58 together, Vancouver's fourth line was on the ice for four shots for compared to one against and finished with an xGF% of 74.44. In the end, they won their matchup, which is what the Canucks need moving forward if the team wants to string together a few consecutive wins together and get back into the playoff race.
To wrap things up, defenceman Elias Pettersson put together another impressive performance. During his 13:48 of even-strength ice time, Vancouver held a 3-0 high-danger scoring chances advantage, with Pettersson recording an xGF% of 56.25. While he still has room to grow, Pettersson looks ready to contribute consistently at the NHL level and should see extended time with the Canucks once the league resumes after the 4 Nations Face-Off break.
