The Stats Behind Game #76: Mammoth 7, Canucks 4

Welcome to this edition of the Vancouver Canucks post-game analytics report. This recurring deep dive breaks down the analytics behind each Canucks game as recorded by Natural Stat Trick. In this article, we look back on Vancouver’s most recent 7–4 loss to the Utah Mammoth.

While the score may suggest otherwise, Vancouver and Utah were actually pretty close when it came to scoring chances-for. The Mammoth ultimately won out by 17–16, with both teams putting up five total scoring chances-for during the first and the third periods. Vancouver’s scoring chances-for mostly came at 5-on-5, with the team putting up 12 in these situations.

Had it not been for their power play, which has been electric as of late, the score would have been much worse for Vancouver. Looking at the heat map while on 5-on-5, Vancouver’s two goals came from the edge of the hashmarks, though their highest rate of scoring chances-for came near the top of the faceoff dot. Despite players like Linus Karlsson managing to get their way to the net, Vancouver was unable to produce anything of substance near Mammoth goaltender Karel Vejmelka at 5-on-5.

The Canucks only had one line play together for more than six minutes last night, that being the trio of Karlsson, Teddy Blueger, and Max Sasson. They were one of three line combinations to register a CF% of 40%, with the others being Marco Rossi with Drew O’Connor and Brock Boeser, and Elias Pettersson with O’Connor and Jake DeBrusk. The highest CF% belonged to Pettersson, DeBrusk, and Evander Kane, who played 4:37 minutes and put up 83.33 CF%.

Although much of Jake DeBrusk’s success as of late has come on the man-advantage, statistically speaking, he had a strong game at 5-on-5 against Utah. His 66.67 CF% and 84.58 xGF% ranked the highest of all his teammates last night, with the forward being one of only four Canucks to put up more high-danger scoring chances-for than against. As well, he still had the overall highest CF% and xGF% of his teammates with 69.57% and 78.28% respectively.

Vancouver resumes their current home stand with a matchup against the Vegas Golden Knights on April 7 at 7:00 pm PT. The Canucks have not won a game against Vegas since April 8, 2024, just shy of two years prior to Tuesday’s game.
