Welcome to this edition of "The Stats Behind The Game." This recurring deep dive breaks down the analytics behind each Vancouver Canucks game as recorded by Natural Stat Trick. In this article, we look back on the Canucks most recent 4-2 loss to the Winnipeg Jets.
The analytics at even strength heavily favoured Vancouver. The Canucks won the scoring chances battle 19-2 while holding an 11-2 high-danger scoring chances advantage on the night. In the end, though, Winnipeg did a better job of finding open ice and converting on their chances, leading to a 4-2 loss to the Jets.
The heatmap for this game is a good illustration of what went wrong for the Canucks in the defensive zone. While Thatcher Demko only faced four high-danger shots all game, Winnipeg did a great job of creating traffic in front of his net and, as mentioned, finding open ice in scoring positions. Overall, though, Vancouver did a good job in the defensive zone, especially on the penalty kill in their regular season finale.

In 7:16 together, the trio prevented Winnipeg from registering a scoring chance while outshooting the Jets 2-1. In the end, they kept the puck out of their own zone for the majority of the night and showed they could work well as a unit in the bottom six.
