The Vancouver Canucks announced yesterday that they have assigned prospect Elias Pettersson (D) to the Abbotsford Canucks.
Pettersson's season in the SHL ended last week, and speculation was that he would come to North America.
In 34 games with Västerås IK this season, the young defenseman had three goals and 11 assists. He also played four games with Örebro HK but didn't register a point.
It could be a while before he plays a game in the AHL. Pettersson has never played on a North American-sized ice rink. He also just completed a full season in Sweden and will likely need time to regain his legs after a long travel.
The 20-year-old is listed at 6'4, 194 lbs, and is a menace in the corners. His big frame should fill out as he gets older and more accustomed to his lanky body. That doesn't stop him from laying the boom in the corners.
Along with fellow Swede Jonathan Lekkerimäki, the Canucks prospect pool continues to rise the ranks in the NHL.
