Vancouver Canucks captain Quinn Hughes has been named the second-best defenceman currently in the NHL. The list was put together by NHL Network, which revealed their top 20 defenders heading into the 2025-26 season. Last season, Quinn Hughes finished second on NHL Network's list, with Makar once again finishing in first.

Hughes had yet another impressive season in 2024-25. He led the Canucks in scoring with 76 points in 68 games and tied Alex Edler for the most points by a defenceman in franchise history. Hughes also finished as a finalist for the Norris Trophy, finishing in third behind Cale Makar and Zach Werenski.

Heading into next season, Hughes is projected to be a finalist yet again for the Norris Trophy. If he stays healthy and performs as he has over the past few seasons, he could also receive Hart Trophy votes at the end of the year. Hughes has received Hart Trophy votes in each of the last two seasons, finishing top 15 in both 2023-24 and 2024-25.

Ultimately, the 2025-26 season is shaping up to be a special one for Hughes. He has already been named to the USA's Olympic team and needs just one point to become the franchise leader for points by a defenceman. If Hughes can have a similar level of production as he did in 2024-25, he should finish the 2025-26 campaign in the top 10 for points in franchise history.
