Vancouver Canucks forward Matthew Stienburg has been placed on waivers, while the three skaters placed on yesterday — Trey Fix-Wolansky, Cole Clayton, and Jimmy Schuldt — have all cleared. The three skaters, as well as Stienburg if he clears, will report to the Abbotsford Canucks.
This news comes only a day after Vancouver's most recent round of roster cuts, during which a total of 15 players were re-assigned to their respective professional and junior hockey clubs. Other players that were assigned to the AHL in this cut include forwards Riley Patterson, Ty Mueller, Ilya Safonov, Ben Berard, and Chase Wouters, and defencemen Kirill Kudryavtsev, Sawyer Mynio, and Isaac Belliveau.
Stienburg made a strong impression during his stint with the Canucks during training camp, performing particularly well during the team's first pre-season game against the Seattle Kraken on September 19. Prior to signing with the Canucks during this year's free-agency period, the forward spent nearly four seasons as part of the Colorado Avalanche organization.
With another forward re-assigned, the Canucks are now down to three forwards primarily in contention for a full-time opening-night roster spot: Arshdeep Bains, Braeden Cootes, and Jonathan Lekkerimäki, with the latter two set to play in tonight's game against the Edmonton Oilers. Puck drop for tonight's game is scheduled for 6:00 pm PT.
