The Vancouver Canucks will honour former goaltender and colour commentator John Garrett in a home matchup tonight against the Carolina Hurricanes.

Garrett, affectionately known as “Cheech” by fans, media, and the team alike, spent his NHL career as a member of the Canucks, Hartford Whalers (now the Hurricanes), and Québec Nordiques (now Colorado Avalanche). After his retirement, he transitioned to broadcasting, joining the Canucks’ broadcasting crew in 2002 and serving in that role until scaling his workload back after the 2022–23 season.

The night will feature a variety of tributes to the late goaltender. Videos and presentations of Garrett will be shown throughout the night, while some of his favourite foods — lots of ketchup included — will be served in the press box.

In addition, Vancouver’s players will wear John Garrett-inspired shirts ahead of the game.

Ahead of the game, Canucks Head Coach Manny Malhotra spoke about what honouring Garrett tonight means to him.

“For years, he was kind of the voice of Canucks hockey. You tend to correlate his voice to the sound of the Canucks. He had some great calls for us as a group, and just his overall energy around the room. A guy that really enjoyed being at the rink and talking shop. That’s what it means to me.”

Malhotra spent three seasons as a member of the Canucks during his playing career, from 2010 to 2013, during which Garrett was a staple on Vancouver’s broadcasting crew.

“He enjoyed talking hockey and understanding the nuances of it and why things happened, and obviously he was privy to a lot of inside information, just being in the room and asking the questions that he wanted to ask. So just his insight to the game and to the Canucks was pretty special.”

Puck drop for tonight’s game is scheduled for 7:00 pm PT.
