While four current members of the Vancouver Canucks are taking part in the 2025 IIHF World Championship, they may have to compete against some former allies. Six former Canucks are also competing for their countries this year — let’s take a look at who they are and their connection to Vancouver.

The Canucks’ Past Five Appearances At The IIHF World Championship
Lammikko has competed in the World Championships three different times, with 2025 being his fourth. He was acquired by the Canucks in October 2021 alongside Noah Juulsen after Vancouver traded former fifth-overall pick, Olli Juolevi, to the Florida Panthers. Lammikko spent the entire 2021–22 season with Vancouver, putting up seven goals and eight assists in 75 games played. After returning to Finland to help the home team win gold in the 2022 World Championship, he joined the Zürcher Schlittschuh Club Lions of the National League and has stayed with the team since.
The 2025 World Championship will be the second one that former Canucks captain Horvat has played in his career, though he represented Canada at the World Juniors back in 2014. Horvat, whose Canucks history needs no introduction, has spent the last two and a half seasons with the New York Islanders, scoring 68 goals and 73 assists in 192 games played. In his nine seasons with the Canucks, four as captain, Horvat played in 621 games — the 13th-most in franchise history. His 201 goals as a Canuck are the ninth-highest in the team’s history, with Brock Boeser having passed him in this stat this season. At this year’s World Championship, it appears that Horvat will skate on a line with Nathan MacKinnon and Travis Konecny, as per Remy Mastey of The Hockey News - New York Rangers.
It’s been five years since Markström departed from the Canucks, though this hasn’t quite impacted Vancouver’s goaltending department in a negative fashion. The Swedish goalie has played in four different World Championships, though his most recent appearance was back in 2019. Since leaving the Canucks in free agency, Markström signed a six-year deal with the Calgary Flames and was traded to the New Jersey Devils last year. Joining him on Sweden’s goaltending roster are Samuel Ersson of the Philadelphia Flyers and Arvid Söderblom of the Chicago Blackhawks.
Lindholm only played 39 regular season and playoff games for the Canucks but made a solid mark on Vancouver’s fanbase during his stint. Despite dealing with a wrist injury during the back half of the 2023–24 season, Lindholm scored six goals and six assists in 26 regular season games. Most impressively, he had 10 points in the team’s 13-game Stanley Cup Playoff run. Lindholm has a pretty decent record at the World Championships, as he won a gold medal in 2017 and placed fifth in 2019 and 2015. In 26 games played for Team Sweden, he has eight goals and 11 assists.
Michaelis, a Canuck for only 15 games in 2020–21, was signed by Vancouver back in March of 2020. The 29-year-old spent four seasons with the Minnesota State University, Mankato before joining the Canucks. He made his NHL debut on March 4, 2021. Before this season, Michaelis played in four different World Championships, putting up eight goals and 12 assists in 29 games played for Team Germany.
A former first-round pick by the Canucks back in 2011, Nicklas Jensen spent three seasons playing for Vancouver before being traded to the New York Rangers in 2016. Jensen’s time with Vancouver only spanned 24 games over the course of three seasons, during which he had three goals and three assists. He has represented Denmark at the World Championships seven different times, tallying 19 goals and 12 assists in 46 games played.
