Zach Sawchenko spent one season with the Canucks, appearing in six regular season games for the Abbotsford Canucks during the 2023-24 campaign.

After electing to hit the open market, former Vancouver Canucks goaltender Zach Sawchenko has signed a one-year deal with the Columbus Blue Jackets. The contract is a two-way deal, with Sawchenko projected to spend the season in the AHL with the Cleveland Monsters. Sawchenko played six regular season games with the Abbotsford Canucks last season, posting a record of 4-1 while recording a .924 SV%.

While Sawchenko's time with the organization is short, he will be remembered for his performance during the Calder Cup Playoffs. With both Artūrs Šilovs and Nikita Tolopilo called up to the NHL, Sawchenko took over the starters net, going 2-4 with a .898 SV%. His best performance was a 47-save performance in Game 3 of the first round, where he propelled the Canucks to a 2-1 win over the Colorado Eagles which also punched Abbotsford's ticket to the second round.

With Vancouver's goaltender position in a logjam, the move should help Sawchenko get more ice time next season. His first game in 2023-24 was on March 16, and unless he wants to play in the ECHL, re-signing with the Canucks would have a similar outcome. With Columbus only having three goaltenders under contract next season, Sawchenko should get plenty of opportunities in 2024-25.
