The 2024 All-Star Skills Competition occurred on Friday, with J.T. Miller, Elias Pettersson and Quinn Hughes competing for a million dollars. This year's event featured 12 players competing in eight challenges, including the fastest skater, hardest shot and obstacle course. Here is a look at how the three Vancouver Canucks did at the event.
Fastest Skater
Hughes started the skills competition with a third-place finish in the fastest skater event. With a time of 14.088, he beat Cale Maker by .001 seconds, recording the fastest time by a defenceman in this year's event. The third-place finish gave him three points towards his total for the competition.
One Timers
Two Canucks participated in this year's one timers event. With 20 points, Pettersson finished fourth, collecting two points toward his total. As for Miller, his 18 points ranked sixth, which meant he picked 0.5 points in this specific event.
Passing Challenge
Pettersson put on a show in the passing challenge, winning the event with 25 points. As a result, he received 5 points added to his total. Quinn Hughes finished sixth with 15 points, while J.T. Miller's seven points ranked tenth, meaning neither collected event points from this competition.
Hardest Shot
Two of the top three spots were filled by Canucks in the hardest shot competition. Coming in second was Miller, whose fastest shot was clocked at 102.34, while Pettersson finished third with a top speed of 98.4. With the results, Miller added four points to his total, while three were added to Pettersson's total.
Stick Handling
Vancouver's two representatives struggled in the stick handling competition. Hughes finished sixth with a time of 29.038, while Pettersson finished seventh, finishing the event in 29.526. Neither player could add a point to their total during the competition.
Accuracy Shooting
The last event of the first round was the accuracy shooting competition, where both Hughes and Miller finished in the top five. Miller ranked third, hitting all four targets in 13.587 seconds, while Hughes finished fifth with a time of 14.815. Miller picked up three points in the event, while Hughes was awarded one point.
Results After Six Events
Pettersson- 10 points (fourth place)
Miller- 7.5 points (sixth place)
Hughes- 4 points (11th place)
Pettersson and Miller advanced to the next round, while Hughes was eliminated.
One on One
The one on one competition featured the top eight players getting to choose which All-Star goaltender they would face. Miller recorded six points against Jeremy Swayman, finishing third, while Pettersson finished with three points against Jake Oettinger, finishing sixth overall. As for Thatcher Demko, he faced Austin Matthews, allowing nine points during the competition.
Results After Seven Events
Miller- 10 points (sixth place)
Pettersson- 10 points (seventh place)
Miller advances to the final round while Elias Pettersson is eliminated.
Obstacle Course
The obstacle course was the final event and featured the top six point-getters from the first seven events. J.T. Miller finished in fifth place, finishing with 12 total points during the event. Connor McDavid would be crowned the champion, finishing the event with 25 points and capturing the $1 million prize.
