On Friday, the Abbotsford Canucks will begin their Calder Cup Finals series against the Charlotte Checkers. The Canucks are 12-6 so far in the 2025 Calder Cup Playoffs, and have defeated the Tucson Roadrunners, Coachella Valley Firebirds, Colorado Eagles and Texas Stars en route to their first ever Western Conference championship. While this is Abbotsford's first time in the final, it won't be for the Canucks organization, as the Utica Comets competed in the Calder Cup Finals a decade ago.
During the 2015 Calder Cup Playoffs, the Comets made a run to remember. Utica took down the Chicago Wolves, Oklahoma City Barons and Grand Rapids Griffins before facing off against the Manchester Monarchs in the championship series. Unfortunately, the Comets' quest for a Calder Cup fell short, as they lost to Manchester in five games.
Utica's 2015 team featured several recognizable names who have played in the NHL. Jacob Markström was the Comets' starting goaltender throughout the playoffs while Adam Clendening, Alex Biega, Bobby Sanguinetti and Frank Corrado patrolled the blue line. As for forwards, Utica has a stacked roster, which included Sven Bärtschi, Brendan Gaunce, Nicklas Jensen, Darren Archibald, Cory Conacher, Alexandre Grenier and Cal O'Reilly.
There wasn't just star power on the ice, but also behind the bench for Utica. Travis Green served as head coach while Nolan Baumgartner was one of his assistants. The group also included former NHL goaltender Robert Esche, who remains the Comets' President to this day.

Fast forward 10 years and the Canucks are in a similar position as they are looking to bring home the Calder Cup trophy. Just like in 2015, the Calder Cup Finals will be a challenging test, as Charlotte has dominated during the playoffs. That being said, Abbotsford has built a strong roster that has a very good chance of being crowned champions this year.
