On May 20, 2024, the Vancouver Canucks’ Cinderella-esque playoff run came to an end. Despite a hard-fought series, the Canucks ultimately fell to the Edmonton Oilers in seven games. Much like many of their games during the 2024 postseason, Vancouver clawed their way back to a one-goal deficit. However, unlike their other games, they weren’t able to get that final goal to extend their season into the Conference Finals.

The Oilers took the first lead in the second period. Cody Ceci scored less than two minutes into the second frame. Less than five minutes later, Zach Hyman added to Edmonton’s total, scoring his 11th of the postseason. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins brought the score up to 3–0 in favour of the Oilers off a power play tally.

Vancouver began their comeback a little less than halfway into the third period. Conor Garland opened the scoring for Vancouver, bringing fans to their feet much like he had when he scored the game-winner in Game 1 of the same series. Four minutes later, Filip Hronek found the back of the net, cutting the Canucks’ deficit to only one goal. With around five minutes left in the game, it was time for Vancouver to get to work.

Despite the Canucks’ spirited effort, they were unable to get that final goal to send Game 7 to overtime. While it wasn’t for lack of trying, ultimately, Vancouver’s tendency to surrender the opening goal led to their postseason elimination. All things considered, for a team that was projected to decline during the 2023–24 season, the Canucks did a fantastic job of proving themselves during both the regular season and playoffs.
