Within the span of a couple of days, both of the PWHL’s expansion teams have found their General Managers. Only a day ago, PWHL Seattle named former Boston Fleet assistant GM, Meghan Turner, their club manager. Today, PWHL Vancouver announced that Cara Gardner Morey will lead the team’s operations in the same role.

“I’m incredibly honored to step into the role of General Manager and lead the PWHL team in Vancouver,” said Gardner Morey in a statement released by the PWHL. “It’s a privilege to help bring the best women’s hockey to one of the greatest cities in the world. We’ll build a team that reflects Vancouver’s passionate spirit - one that competes for the Walter Cup and becomes part of the city’s fabric. I can’t wait to get started. Let’s build something incredible together, Vancouver!”
Gardner Morey comes into the role with eight years of head coaching experience at Princeton University. She stepped into the role in June of 2017. During Gardner Morey’s tenure as head coach, the women’s team won both an Ivy League championship and ECAC tournament title. Her coaching résumé also includes assistant coaching stints with the U18 Canadian women’s team and Team Canada during the Rivalry Series, as well as four years spent as a development coach with the Philadelphia Flyers.

As an athlete, Gardner Morey played hockey both on-ice and on the field. She spent four years at Brown University and ultimately ended up playing in Canada’s first professional women’s hockey league, the National Women’s Hockey League (NWHL).
PWHL’s appointment of Gardner Morey as the first GM in franchise history could indicate some of the players the club may be inclined to pick during the expansion draft. In her time at Princeton, Gardner Morey worked with current PWHL players such as 2024 first overall draft pick Sarah Fillier (New York Sirens), defender Claire Thompson (Minnesota Frost), forward Maggie Connors (Toronto Sceptres), and defender Mariah Keopple (Montréal Victoire). The first ever PWHL Expansion Draft will occur on June 9 at 5:30 pm PT.
