Like many expected after the Vancouver Canucks’ 2024–25 season, Quinn Hughes has done the heavy lifting in terms of earning votes for the NHL Awards. He was the only Canuck to receive votes for the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy, which has been described as the award for the “nicest NHL player” (awarded for sportsmanship).
This year, L.A. Kings captain Anže Kopitar (856 voting points) took home the award, with this being the third he has won in his NHL career. Finishing second and third in voting behind him were Brayden Point of the Tampa Bay Lightning (793) and Jack Eichel of the Vegas Golden Knights (782). Canucks captain Quinn Hughes ended up on the list as well, tying Cole Caufield, Miro Heiskanen, Auston Matthews, and Jason Robertson for 34th in voting. Hughes received one fourth and one fifth-place vote.
In 2024–25, Hughes came close to another record-setting year. He finished the season tied with Alex Edler’s franchise record in career points by a defenceman with 409. Despite dealing with multiple injuries throughout the year, he played a career-high average of 25:44 per game, and scored 16 goals and 60 assists in 68 games. His 29 total penalty minutes throughout the season were less than the amount taken by defenders such as Zach Werenski, Victor Hedman, and Evan Bouchard.

While no current Canucks other than Hughes received votes for this award, many former Canucks also made it on the list of players who earned votes. Tyler Toffoli of the San Jose Sharks finished tied for 32nd in voting with one third-place vote. Former Canucks captain Bo Horvat earned one fourth-place vote — the same as Edmonton Oilers superstar Connor McDavid. As well, Hughes’ former defensive pairing partner, Chris Tanev, had one fifth-place vote.

Surprisingly, no active Canuck has ever won the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy. Elias Pettersson came close last season, finishing second in voting to award-winner Jaccob Slavin. Pettersson is the only player in franchise history to be named a finalist for this award.
