Vancouver Canucks forwards Conor Garland and Drew O’Connor of Team USA are going to the 2025 IIHF World Championship finals. They’ll play Switzerland for the tournament’s gold medal tomorrow. With today’s loss to the USA, Marcus Pettersson and Team Sweden will play for bronze on the same day. Here’s how the matchup between Canucks went earlier today.
Latest From THN’s Vancouver Canucks Site:
Despite their run of success during the preliminary round, Pettersson and Sweden were unable to outlast Team USA’s offence. USA got off to a 4–0 lead by the end of the second period, with their first goal coming seven minutes into the game. Garland continued his stretch of offensive firepower by scoring USA’s 3–0 goal and logging 15:47 minutes of ice time. After the game, he was named one of Team USA’s top three players of the tournament alongside Logan Cooley and Frank Nazar. O’Connor played 13:05 minutes of his team’s victory and finished the game with a +1 rating. On the other side of the ice, Pettersson played 15:57 and was -1 on the day.
Garland and O’Connor will now play Switzerland for a gold medal. This marks the first time in 91 years that Team USA has done so. The last time USA placed on the podium in the IIHF World Championship was in 2021, when they earned a bronze medal. They only have one gold medal in their team’s history, which they won back in 1933. Pettersson and Sweden will face Denmark for Bronze, with their most recent bronze medal placement being last year’s tournament.
