The NHL and NHLPA announced that the World Cup of Hockey will return in 2028.

On Wednesday, the NHL and NHLPA announced that the World Cup of Hockey would be returning in 2028. This international tournament has happened three times before, with the last edition occurring in 2016. Unlike the event in 2016, there will be no Team North America or Team Europe, with the tournament focused strictly on teams from individual countries.

Having a World Cup of Hockey every four years is a great idea by the NHL and NHLPA. It means more opportunities to watch best-on-best international hockey, which has been an issue over the past decade. An event like this could also benefit NHL cities across North America, like Vancouver, which has a history of hosting international events.

Over the past 15 years, Vancouver has been a hub for international sporting events, including the 2010 Olympics, the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup, the 2019 World Juniors, the 2019 NHL draft, and the 2025 Invictus Games. Vancouver is also a host city for the upcoming 2026 World Cup, with seven games being played at BC Place.

Another benefit of having the 2028 World Cup of Hockey in Vancouver is that games could also be played in Seattle. For example, Group A could be hosted by the Vancouver Canucks at Rogers Arena, while the Seattle Kraken would host Group B at Climate Pledge Arena. With the two separated by just a few hours, having the event in Vancouver and Seattle would allow both cities and organizations to profit while bringing fans from around the globe to the Pacific Northwest.

While there are plenty of cities worthy of hosting, the NHL and NHLPA should consider bringing the 2028 World Cup of Hockey to Vancouver. As mentioned, the city has a strong track record of hosting events, which includes multiple hockey-related tournaments at Rogers Arena. In the end, hosting the World Cup of Hockey would be a massive win not just for the city and the Canucks organization but fans in Vancouver who would once again get to see the best players in the NHL represent their countries in a best-of-best tournament.
