The Vancouver Canucks have announced that they are extending General Manager Patrik Allvin to a multi-year extension.
Allvin has been the Canucks GM since January 26, 2022. Allvin worked as a scout for the Montreal Canadiens and Pittsburgh Penguins for 19 years before working as the assistant GM and interim GM for the Penguins. The familiarity with Jim Rutherford goes back a long time with the Penguins and is shown through this extension.
Allvin was brought into the Canucks organization when they were in a difficult situation. The roster had a lot of young talent but were struggling to find the right supporting players to help them make the playoffs. Allvin has made a lot of key signings and trades that have led them to lead the NHL this season.
As the first Swedish General Manager in NHL history, Allvin has had to prove that he isn't afraid to make big moves. During his tenure with the Canucks he has resigned J.T. Miller and Brock Boeser, traded for Filip Hronek and has gone out and acquired Teddy Blueger, Pius Suter, Ian Cole, Carson Soucy, Casey DeSmith, and Sam Lafferty for this season.
The Canucks GM has used his previous work as a European scout to help the Canucks as well. The Canucks sent three players to the World Juniors to play for Sweden. Elias Pettersson, Tom Willander and Jonathan Lekkerimaki won silver at the 2024 World Juniors. Lekkerimaki was also the tournament leader in goals and won tournament MVP.
His biggest move was hiring head coach Rick Tocchet who has changed the identity of the Canucks. The Canucks have a lot of big decisions coming up with the Elias Pettersson contract negotiations and the trade deadline fast approaching, but the organization clearly feels that Allvin is best suited to lead them.
