Vancouver Canucks defenseman Tyler Myers was fined $5,000 today for his elbowing penalty against the Columbus Blue Jackets last night.

At 11:55 of the third period, Myers was assessed a five-minute major penalty and a game misconduct, but not without some confusion.

As per the rule, it will be reviewed whenever an official calls a major penalty. The confusion behind the call on Myers is because the Referee originally called the penalty for a check from behind on Ian Cole. After review, the penalty on Cole was taken off the board, and Myers was suddenly tossed.

Rule 20.6 states: "Referees shall review all plays that result in the assessment of any Major Penalty (other than a Major Penalty for Fighting) for the purpose of confirming (or modifying) their original call on the ice. The Referee shall have the following options after video review of his own call: (i) confirming his original Major Penalty call; (ii) reducing his original Major Penalty call to a lesser penalty; or (iii) rescinding the original Major Penalty altogether."

By THN's interpretation of the rule, it does not state that the official can change who the original call was on. By rule, the officials did not call the penalty properly. Myers was assessed a major penalty and game misconduct despite the Referee not calling the original play on the ice.

Luckily for the Canucks they were able to kill off the penalty with ease and completed their third-period comeback with an overtime win.

While getting fined still isn't fair to Myers, he at least isn't suspended.
