Reports have come out that the Vancouver Canucks are interested in acquiring former San Jose Sharks winger Sasha Chmelevski.
Kevin Weekes reported today that multiple NHL teams are interested in the 2017 sixth-round draft pick. The San Jose Sharks still own his contractual rights. San Jose has permitted him to talk with other franchises.
He has played 24 games at the NHL level and has ten assists. Now playing in the KHL with Salavat Yulaev Ufa, Chmelevski scored 48 points in 67 games during the 22-23 season. He's upped his production this season, scoring 43 points in 49 games.
The 24-year-old has spent time in the AHL with the San Jose Barracuda. In 122 career games, he has had 35 goals and 53 assists.
With San Jose in a rebuild, it is interesting that they aren't interested in bringing the forward back into the fold. The Canucks might have the upper hand, as Dan Milstein represents Chmelevski.
Milstein and the Canucks have gone hand in hand this season. Milstein also represents Andrei Kuzmenko, Ilya Mikheyevm, and Nikita Zadorov.
The Canucks have been in the news recently about reports of wanting to add a top-six forward at the trade deadline.
Chmelevski might not be a top-six forward immediately, but his offensive potential might be enough to take a flyer on. Given that he doesn't have an NHL contract, Vancouver likely won't have to give up much to get him.
At most, the Canucks would could give up a 2025 fifth-round draft pick, and even then, that might be too much value. The Sharks are in full rebuild mode and want to add as much draft capital as possible.
Over the next couple of weeks, expect to hear some front runners to acquire Chmelevski. That list should include the Canucks.
