Plenty of former Vancouver Canucks have carved out successful careers around the world after leaving the organization. Whether playing for some of the best teams in Europe or excelling in non-traditional hockey markets, these one-time Canucks continue to apply their trade outside of North America. Today, we look at defenceman Erik Brännström, who played for Vancouver during the 2024-25 season.

After six seasons with the Ottawa Senators, Brännström signed with the Colorado Avalanche during the 2024 off-season. His tenure with Colorado wouldn't even last four months, as on October 6, 2024, the left-shot defenceman was traded to the Canucks for a fourth-round draft pick in 2025 and Tucker Poolman. Brännström began his career with Vancouver in the AHL, but played only two games before being called up to the NHL.
Brännström made his Canucks debut on October 17, 2024, versus the Florida Panthers. It wouldn't take long for him to record his first point, as that came on October 22, 2024, against the Chicago Blackhawks. In total, Brännström would play 28 games for Vancouver during the 2024-25 season, recording three goals and producing eight points.
While Brännström did add an element of offence to the Canucks lineup, he was in and out of the lineup and eventually was sent back to the Abbotsford Canucks in January. The former first-round pick played six games in the AHL before being traded to the New York Rangers as part of the J.T. Miller trade. Brännström would actually be traded a third time in 2024-25 as he was moved to the Buffalo Sabres for Nicolas Aube-Kubel.

Once the season was complete, Brännström decided to sign with Swiss club Lausanne HC of the NL. If the team name sounds familiar to Canucks fans, it is because it is the same organization that prospect Basile Sansonnens plays for. Lausanne HC is currently wrapping up their pre-season with Brännström and Sansonnens having already been used as a pair.
