Golden Knights adding more players to blue line in effort to negate injuries

Golden Knights adding more players to blue line in effort to negate injuries

Jason Mowry - USA TODAY Sports - ANALYSIS: Bjornfot gives Vegas Golden Knights more NHL-ready depth at defenseman

The rash of injuries to the blue has caused the Vegas Golden Knights to go back to the waiver pool to find NHL-capable talent to help negate some of the ailments.

The Golden Knights claimed Tobias Bjornfot off waivers from the Los Angeles Kings.

"All I know he's a left shot who's played 117 games in the NHL. We're missing some guys on the back end," Vegas coach Bruce Cassidy said. "It's an opportunity take a look at a guy who's obviously a first-round pick. So there's some talent there."

    The move serves two purposes.

The first is that it hurts the Pacific Division rival, who were hoping to sneak the former first-round pick through waivers and assign him to Ontario.

The second, and probably more important, is that it gives the Golden Knights another option at the blue line with Shea Theodore, Kaedan Korczak, Daniil Miromanov, and Ben Hutton out with injuries.

The move carries little risk in the grand scheme of things. The obvious question is, how much does he cost? It's a natural question regarding the salary cap-pushing Golden Knights.

Bjornfot's cap hit is $775,000 annual average value, making him a cheap option.

On the ice, the defenseman, as previously mentioned, is a former first-round pick, proving there is something there to unlock.

He can be a two-way defenseman with solid puck movement ability, and he's shown flashes of brilliance, albeit rare, in his NHL career.

He's a bit on the smaller end of the defensemen in terms of size, standing at the same height as Alec Martinez (6-foot), but that won't stop him from cracking the NHL roster if he proves to be a valuable two-way defenseman.

"At the end of the day, we'll see where he fits," Cassidy said. "Can't promise when he'll go in. Can't even promise you when he'll be here. It just happened. Hopefully he comes a good asset for us – short term and long term."
