Stagnant offense and a six-game skid demand bold action. By swapping underperforming veterans for aggressive trades and high-scoring prospects, Kevin Cheveldayoff can replicate Toronto’s blueprint to spark a rebuild.
The Winnipeg Jets are coming off their sixth straight loss, tying their worst losing streak since March 2024, and it raises the question of whether more radical moves are needed.
One team that offers a possible blueprint is the Toronto Maple Leafs as the Eastern Conference club was in a similar spot to the Jets, coming off a missed playoff berth while holding key pieces it wanted to keep in contention, with the only main difference being they caught a major bounce by landing the first overall pick.
Toronto then went further, overhauling the entire bottom of its forward group and making more aggressive trades like adding star winger Kirill Marchenko. Winnipeg could consider doing the same as they are well positioned to move out players who haven't been productive in favor of fresh faces.
They already added Dawson Mercer and Nick Bjugstad to the offense in the Connor Hellebuyck trade, and they should consider more adjustments. Prospects like Brayden Yager should be brought up and given a shot as keeping them in the AHL has little point when they are averaging a point-per-game.
They can be brought up while NHLers like Nino Niederreiter, among many others, aren't producing well enough and could be moved out or even sent down for added motivation.
Winnipeg has the third-worst offense in the league at 2.33 goals per game, and keeping struggling players in the lineup won't fix that. Fresh blood is needed, and adding more of it would be a good start.
Many like to say players don't want to come to the Winnipeg market, but players without trade protection don't have a choice, and General Manager Kevin Cheveldayoff can make impactful moves.
Bryan Rust, Shane Wright and Ivan Miroshnichenko are all potentially available players without trade protection who could bring a fresh look to the lineup. There is more the Jets can do if they are bold enough, and time is of the essence.
