We’re running out of superlatives to say about Ottawa 67’s goaltender Ryder Fetterolf. The 2008-born netminder has come in and taken control of the crease for the Barber Poles. Moving from a prep high school program (Gilmour Academy) to the OHL in your NHL draft year can be daunting, but Fetterolf has embraced the challenge head-on and has put himself in the running for Goaltender of the Year.

Fetterolf has yet again taken a weekly award. He has been named the OHL’s Goaltender of the Week (GOTW).

Surprisingly to note, this is the first week Fetterolf has won the OHL’s GOTW. He has, however, taken home Rookie of the Week honors twice, in weeks seven and nine.

The NHL draft-eligible goaltender heads into the holiday break rolling two victories on back-to-back nights against Peterborough and Brantford. Fetterolf stopped 27 of 28 last Friday in Ottawa’s 4-1 win. Then, on Saturday, the 67’s flexed their muscles against a Bulldogs squad missing several key players due to the World Juniors tournament, pitching a 19-save shutout.

Fetterolf now has just one loss in the last 14 games. During this stretch, he has had only one game with a save percentage below .900. Even that loss he had back on Dec. 5 saw him stop 37 of 41 for a .902 save percentage.

The person in the 67’s hockey operations department who identified the undrafted American netminder deserves a raise. Ottawa continues to surprise the OHL, becoming one of the league’s best teams. Their goaltending plays a significant role in that.

Fetterolf is committed to Penn State University, but hopefully the 67’s will retain his services past this season. He’s shooting up the draft boards with his play, and despite only being six feet, he should be considered as one of the top goalies eligible.
