The Peterborough Petes are on track to get back in the playoffs for the first time since 2023. It’s been a rough two years for Petes fans, but that’s the price you pay in junior hockey when you win a championship, which Peterborough did in 2023.

Peterborough finished in fourth place in the East that season. They swept the Sudbury Wolves in the first round of the playoffs, but then were the underdogs in the second and third rounds against Ottawa and North Bay. However, the Petes pulled through on top, only to achieve one more upset in the finals against the London Knights.

Why I bring this up is because the Petes may finish fourth again this year. Will history repeat itself? One man who will have a big say in that is the man who has guarded the crease all season, and he was dialed in this past week.

Peterborough’s Easton Rye was named the OHL’s Goaltender of the Week. This is the second time Rye has taken home the honors, winning it back in Week 10.

Rye, 19, is a local boy. Hailing from Peterborough, Ontario, he’s got the home crowd back in full flux, cheering him on. And despite the Petes allowing the eighth-most goals against (137), Rye has been everything for his squad.

The Bentley University commit went 3-0 last week, pitching a 25-save shutout against Oshawa, an incredibly 36-save performance versus Kingston, and capping it off with a 41-save night against Owen Sound, where the team was heavily outshot 44-29.

With those three wins, Rye has achieved the 20-win mark on the year, joining only Mason Vaccari and Joey Costanzo as the only three goalies with 20+ wins.

He’s one of the busiest netminders in the OHL. Rye averages 33.5 shots against per game, facing the second-most total shots with 1,007. His 922 saves are the third-most, giving him a save percentage of .916%, tied for seventh-best.

The Petes have leaned on Rye all season long. Backup Masen Johnston has yet to hit the 10-game played mark. If Peterborough is to repeat history and upset the “Big Three” in the East, it will be done on the backs of their hometown boy.
