Photo credit: David Pickering/OHL ImagesBrennan Othmann was drafted second overall by the Flint Firebirds in 2019. He was a member of that juggernaut Don Mills Flyers team, which featured Seattle Kraken’s Shane Wright and Los Angeles Kings’ Brandt Clarke. They only lost one game all season long.
Although Othmann had his 2020-21 OHL season tarnished due to the Covid-19 pandemic, his OHL career was glamorous. He was over a point-per-game player in his career, including a 50-goal season with Flint in the 2021-22 season.
The pesky, goal-scoring winger was traded to the Peterborough Petes during the 2022-23 season and won his second consecutive World Junior gold medal in that same season. His OHL career ended with lifting the J. Ross Robertson Cup above his head with the Petes.
Othmann’s future looked bright, and the New York Rangers certainly thought so.
The Rangers drafted him 16th overall in 2021, but it has been tough sledding for the Scarborough, Ontario, native. Despite displaying his ability to produce at the AHL level as a 20 and 21-year-old, his opportunities to flourish with New York in the NHL haven’t lasted long.
Are the Rangers potentially ruining the development of another one of their first-rounders?
The Hockey News writer Tony Ferrari recently wrote a story about Othmann’s messy situation with the New York Rangers.
