Penn State gets a commitment from OHL netminder Mason Courville
Flint Firebirds Goaltender Mason Courville has committed to play NCAA hockey at Penn State University, Courville announced on Instagram.
Courville, 16, appeared in 18 games this season in the Ontario Hockey League with Flint, holding an 8-8-2 record with a 3.06 GAA and a .893 SV% with a shutout recorded. Courville also played in three games for the GOHL Waterloo Siskins.
Courville was drafted by the Firebirds in the third round of the 2025 OHL Priority Selection, 55th overall, already having found himself getting OHL starts as a 16-year-old.
Having represented the United States internationally, Courville played in three games for the USA at the 2026 Hlinka-Gretzky Cup, having a 2.14 GAA and a .921 SV%. Courville appeared in relief in the Americans 8-1 loss in the Gold Medal game to Canada.
Courville can afford to wait to begin his collegiate career with fellow American OHL netminder Ryder Fetterolf, a fourth round pick of the Carolina Hurricanes in the 2026 NHL Draft, moving to the Nittany Lions for next season, leaving Courville with a lack of starting chances.
Courville is expected to be with Flint for next season, with it likely he could extend his stay to the 2027-28 OHL season, Courville's draft year, with a potential start date at Penn State for 2028.
