In the past week, the Kingston Frontenacs made several signings, including a potential starting goaltender and a promising 2009-born American forward drafted in the 2025 OHL Priority Selection.
The first signing they made was back on July 11, locking up free agent goaltender Matthew Minchak to an OHL Scholarship and Development Agreement.
Minchak, 18, recorded a 16-14-0 record with a 2.06 goals-against-average and a .931 save percentage with the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite 18U during the 2024-25 season. He is committed to Colgate University and is expected to head over to the NCAA for the 2026-27 season.
“Matthew is an athletic goaltender with great size. He moves extremely well, especially for someone with his height (6-foot-5). He has good battle and compete in his game, and we are looking forward to him working with our goalie coach Tyson Teichmann to continue refining his technical and tactical game,” said Frontenacs GM Kory Cooper.
Kingston have lost both goaltenders from last season. They won’t have Charlie Schenkel to occupy the crease next season, with him aging out of the league — and recently committed to Robert Morris University — and trading away Mason Vaccari to the Flint Firebirds earlier this summer.
The American netminder from Cranford, New Jersey, will battle for playing time in Kingston with promising 2008-born Gavin Betts.
Kingston’s second signing also comes from the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite organization. This past Tuesday, the team announced the signing of forward Nolan Snyder to an OHL Scholarship and Development Agreement.
Snyder, 16, recorded 96 points (34 goals, 62 assists) in 62 games with the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite 15U team during the 2024-25 season. He led his team in points, narrowly beating out Guelph Storm second-rounder Mark Pape by only two points.
The 5-foot-10, 170-pound right-shot forward was drafted in the eighth round (158th overall) by the organization in the 2025 OHL Priority Selection.
“Nolan is a highly intelligent player who can create offense and shows a high level of compete. He sees the ice well and is able to make plays while remaining responsible in his own end,” said Cooper.
Kingston has now signed two players from their 2025 draft class. Last month, they signed defenseman Matthew Henderson, who was selected 17th overall, to an OHL contract. However, the club has yet to sign their ninth overall pick, Aleks Kulemin.
