A couple big NCAA commitment decisions, Oshawa, Windsor and Soo complete signings.
We're now just about to enter OHL draft week, and things are beginning to happen across the league.
Teams are getting their signings done ahead of the draft, finishing their lists, and of course trades are being discussed.
There are also still plenty of NCAA commitment decisions that need to be made, and with the NHL draft combine on hand in Buffalo this week, some decisions are being made on those files as well.
Here are some headlines from around the OHL world this weekend.
Beckham Edwards Leaves Sarnia For Notre Dame
Beckham Edwards' departure will be a big loss for a Sarnia team trying to get back into the playoffs. (Photo: Natalie Shaver/OHL Images)With the Sarnia Sting adding three forwards to their roster in the past couple of weeks, they were overloaded up front, and it seemed like someone would be on their way out in some way.
However, it wasn't initially clear who it would be, and Edwards' departure was probably not what most fans would want to see.
Alas, that is what will be happening. The London, Ont., native announced to reporters at the combine he'll be heading stateside after two seasons in Sarnia, joining the University of Notre Dame for the 2026-27 season.
This obviously comes as a big hit to the Sting, losing one of their top forwards. With the team missing the playoffs in each of the past two seasons, it's difficult to see top players depart like this.
Edwards is expected to go somewhere in the second or third round at the NHL draft later this month.
Di Iorio, Mbuyi, Rogowski Plan To Return To OHL Next Season
To wrap up the combine news, a trio of draft-eligible forwards will likely be returning to their OHL teams for their D+1 seasons.
While the Sting will be losing Edwards, Di Iorio will be returning to the team for 2026-27. This isn't too much of a surprise, as he doesn't have an active NCAA commitment, but it's some relief for Sarnia fans who definitely couldn't afford to lose their two top forwards ahead of next season.
Meanwhile, Pierce Mbuyi (Penn State) and Brooks Rogowski (Michigan State) do have active NCAA commitments, but both expressed their expectations to return to the OHL in media scrums at the combine on Saturday.
For all three of these players, another OHL season is probably the most beneficial for their development, being able to be top players in junior before taking the step into college hockey.
However, none of these decisions are 100% final until the puck drops, and of course if whichever team ends up drafting these players push for them to head to college early, things can change.
But, for now, it seems likely these three forwards will be on OHL ice this fall.
Greyhounds, Generals Add American Draft Picks
The trend of more and more Americans coming over to the CHL continues, with two more signings coming this weekend.
The Soo Greyhounds have picked up Cam Anderson, their ninth-round pick in the 2025 OHL draft.
The 6-foot-3 forward played last season with the Chicago Reapers 16U AAA program, putting up 55 points in 58 games.
Meanwhile, the Oshawa Generals added Cole Mazzoni, a 6-foot-2 forward who was their 9th-rounder in 2025.
The Livonia, MI, native played most of last season with the Oakland Jr. Grizzlies program, putting up 79 points in 61 games. He also featured in one USHL game with the Green Bay Gamblers, and featured in a few games with the USNTDP.
