Brandon Shaw has been hired as an Assistant Coach for the Owen Sound Attack

The Owen Sound Attack coaching staff is starting to take shape for the 2024-25 season. Earlier this month, the team announced Scott Wray as the team’s new Head Coach and now they have found a partner for Scott behind the Attack bench, with the hiring of former Niagara IceDogs Assistant Coach, Brandon Shaw.

Shaw, 29, served as an assistant coach in Niagara for the past two seasons. Before that, he was involved in multiple hockey operations and coaching roles in the BCHL out in Western Canada for the Merritt Centennials, Alberni Valley Bulldogs, and finishing as Head Coach and Assistant General Manager of the Coquitlam Express.

“I think this group has a lot of potential and I look forward to growing as a team over the coming years,” said Shaw per the Owen Sound.

“I am excited to get to know the Owen Sound community. The Bayshore is known for its amazing atmosphere and the fans are incredible. I am eager to start the season and to get to work with the players.”

Shaw comes from a young IceDogs team, which could benefit the Attack as they may have a younger roster in the upcoming season.

Head Coach Scott Wray cited that people he talked to regarding his new assistant coach, all said he is a good communicator, great with the players, and does a great job breaking down videos.

That kind of mentorship behind the bench could prove advantageous to the development of 2007-borns Harry Nansi, Jake Crawford, and recently signed first-rounder, Pierce Mbuyi.

During Shaw’s time with the Alberni Valley Bulldogs in the BCHL, he served as an assistant coach in 2019-2020 and associate coach in 2020-21, while heading the role of director of player development for the organization.

Part of Shaw’s hockey expertise could be his skills in developing young players, which may be why Attack GM Dale DeGray sees him as a very good fit in Owen Sound.
