Ever since Tynan Lawrence was drafted 10th overall to the Chicoutimi Saguenéens in 2024, fans have been wondering if he'll ever come over. To this date, he remains the only first rounder from that class to have yet to have signed in the QMJHL, following the signing of Cameron Chartrand by Saint John.
However, it appears that Lawrence will remain in the USHL with the Muskegon Lumberjacks for his draft campaign, fresh off of a championship season where he won playoff MVP.
"The youngster, as we speak, wants to return to Muskegon," Yanick Jean, Chicoutimi's head coach and general manager told Le Quotidien.
This is a massive blow to the championship aspirations of Chicoutimi, who is poised to be a strong team but could really use a game-breaking talent like Lawrence. So far, Lawrence is ranked eighth overall according to EliteProspects consolidated rankings, with FloHockey's Chris Peters having him ranked as high as sixth.
Lawrence, who turns 17 in less than a week, led the Lumberjacks in points with 54 (25+29) through 56 games. That is tied for 14th most points in the league and led all USHL-based 2026 draft eligibles in goals, assists and points.
This is even harsher of a blow for Chicoutimi as in January the team had the option to void his rights in exchange for a compensatory pick and chose to keep his affiliation on the off-chance he'd sign.
