On Tuesday, the Lethbridge Hurricanes became the sixth team to clinch a spot in the 2025 WHL Playoffs. The Hurricanes secured their berth impressively by defeating the Saskatoon Blades 2-0. This will be the seventh consecutive time Lethbridge has qualified for the playoffs, with the team looking to make it past the first round for the first time since 2018.
The Hurricanes were one of the most active teams on the trade market this season. They brought in NHL-drafted prospects in Caden Price, Brayden Yager, Vojtech Port and Jordan Gustafson while also securing their crease with the addition of 2024 Memorial Cup standout Jackson Unger. Through 58 games, Lethbridge has secured 75 points, while their 36 wins rank fifth in the WHL.
While the Hurricanes have a ton of offensive talent on their roster, they have been successful due to their defensive structure. They have given up the third-fewest goals this season at 164, while their 81% penalty kill also ranks third in the WHL. Ultimately, Lethbridge is a dangerous team, as they have shown an ability to shut down some of the best offensively gifted players in the league while capitalizing on their opportunities.
Now that the Hurricanes have secured their spot in the playoffs, the focus shifts to seeding. As of Tuesday night, Lethbridge sits in fourth place and are seven points behind Medicine Hat for first in the division. With a strong final push, the Hurricanes might be able to close the gap but will most likely be looking to pass the Calgary Hitmen to claim third place in the conference.
