The WHL is entering uncharted waters thanks to the new NCAA commitment rule. Unlike in the past, players from all three CHL leagues are now NCAA eligible and can make the move starting in 2025-26. This new option is already creating some complications, as some of the WHL's top talent have already either committed or are rumoured to be joining the NCAA next season.

While the new rule is beneficial to players, as it gives them more options, it is causing some issues for WHL teams. Instead of being able to plan two to three years in the future, teams will need to change their mindset to year-to-year, as organizations will not know exactly which players will be on the roster. The new rules could also limit marketability for organizations, as fans may not want to invest in memorabilia or jersey for players who only intend on being in the WHL for one season.

Another factor to monitor down the line will be how teams approach trades and determine whether they are contenders. For example, if a team is aware that they are going to be losing their top three players the following season, that could impact how aggressive they are at the trade deadline. Ultimately, this could mean more teams making substantial moves, as their window of opportunity could close earlier than usual.

Ultimately, this new NCAA eligibility rule will have a profound impact on teams across the WHL. While there may be changes in the future, as of right now, the league and its organizations are going to face challenges that they have not had to deal with in the past. In the end, the 2025-26 season will be an intriguing one, as teams across the CHL work out ways to stay competitive not just this year, but in the future.
