The WHL is set to play a big role in the 2025 NHL Entry Draft. Leading up to the draft, we at The Hockey News will be profiling some of the players who are projected to hear their names called at the end of June. Today's prospect is center Cole Reschny, who plays for the Victoria Royals.
There are very few prospects in this draft like Reschny. Listed at 5'11", 187 lbs, the 18-year-old recorded 92 points in 62 games, before dominating the playoffs with 25 points in 11 post-season games. A balanced player who can make an impact at both ends of the ice, Reschny has the potential to have a stellar career at the pro level.
What makes Reschny so dangerous in the offensive zone is that he can generate scoring chances through both his playmaking and shot. He loves to have the puck on his stick and is always moving around to try to find open space in scoring areas. While he is very active, Reschny is also a patient player, as he waits until he has a clear lane before either shooting or passing the puck.
While most of the focus is on Reschny's offensive game, his work in the defensive zone deserves to be recognized. He can win board battles at a consistent rate and understands where he needs to be positionally in order to break up plays. Reschny's ability to read the play also comes in handy as he can break up passes and get the puck out of the defensive zone.
The next step in Reschny's development will be the transition game. While he did excel at carrying zone entries, he needs to work on his ability to hit teammates in stride from the defensive zone, rather than just clearing the puck down the ice. If Reschny can become more of a playmaker in the neutral zone, it will add yet another dimension to his already strong game.
Reschny is projected to be a first-round pick at this year's draft. He has an intriguing toolkit, and, as mentioned, can impact the game both offensively and defensively. If Reschny can keep developing at this rate, he could become a valuable middle-six forward at the NHL level.
