Casey O'Brien is headed to the New York Sirens. Only minutes after picking Kristyna Kaltounkova first overall the New York Sirens traded defender Ella Shelton to the Toronto Sceptres in exchange for the third overall pick, and the #22 pick in the 2025 Draft.
O'Brien led the NCAA in scoring last season recording 88 points in 41 games. Her totals placed her 16 points ahead of the second place scofer in the nation and saw O'Brien pass Hilary Knight as Wisconsin's all-time leading.
Wisconsin head coach Mark Johnson called O'Brien "the best player in college hockey this year by far" and she proved it not only winning the scoring crown, but by being named a First Team All-American and winning the Patty Kazmaier Award, given annually to the nation's top player.
O'Brien is a physical player with a good motor who sees the ice well, navigates through traffic using her hands and skating ability, and projects as a top six scorer wherever she lands. She can score, but also thrives as a set up woman.
Playing a professional style game already and coming from a powerhouse Wisconsin program, O'Brien seems poised to thrive in the PWHL immediately. She was one of the best in the NCAA in the face-off circle as well winning 61.3% of her draws, and being utilized in all situations including on the penalty kill and power play with Wisconsin.
While O'Brien was a noted omission from USA's senior national team at the World Championships she has represented USA at the Rivalry Series and helped their Collegiate Select team win the Six Nations tournament in Finland last December.
