PWHL San Jose sign Tia Chan and Sloane Matthews to 3 year contracts, solidifying the future of expansion roster.
PWHL San Jose announced today that Tia Chan and Sloane Matthews have signed 3-year Standard Player Agreements ahead of the 2026-27 PWHL season. Chan was the first goalie drafted by PWHL San Jose, drafted 28th overall, while Matthews was drafted 16th overall.
Sloane Matthews, 22, starts her professional career following four seasons at The Ohio State University, where she won a National Championship in 2024 while recording 104 career points (48G, 56A) in 161 games. In the 2025-26 season, the Wayzata Minnesota native set career highs in goals (20), assists (24), and points (44) while leading the Buckeyes in power play goals. Matthews will reunite fellow OSU alums Maddi Wheeler and Hadley Hartmetz in San Jose
Tia Chan starts her professional career off a final collegiate season that saw her win the 2025-26 Women’s College Hockey Goalie of the Year Award while earning First Team All-American Honors with the University of Connecticut. Chan, 24, hails from Hamilton, Ontario, but has also represented China internationally at the 2022 Olympics. At UCONN, Chan saw a 1.55 goals-against-average statline across 37 appearances in her final season. She set single season records for wins (27), saves (1,122), and save percentage (.951) and was named UCONN female athlete of the year. She graduates as the program’s all-time leader in wins (70), shutouts (25), and save-percentage (.946).
With these three signings, PWHL has inked their first three draft picks to three-year agreements, making them the only players of the 16 currently rostered signed through 2028-29.
