The Toronto Maple Leafs have placed forward Alex Nylander and defenseman Dakota Mermis on waivers, per Elliotte Friedman.
Nylander recorded four shots and went pointless in five games with the Maple Leafs this season, averaging 9:53 of ice time per game.
The 26-year-old will return to the Toronto Marlies if he clears waivers, he has eight goals and 12 points in 14 AHL games this season.
The younger brother of Leafs forward William Nylander, Alex signed an AHL deal with Toronto in July and inked a NHL contract on Nov. 22.
The 30-year-old Mermis suffered a significant jaw injury in September and has only played three games with the Marlies this season on a conditioning loan, he recorded one assist.
The Alton, Ill., native has 140 points in 434 career AHL games, he served as captain in the five games he played for the Iowa Wild last season. He will provide a veteran presence to an already deep Marlies blueline.
