Power moves by Anaheim!
When you make a selection at the top of a draft, it's normally thought to be a gamechanger. For the Anaheim Ducks, getting Leo Carlsson with the second overall pick in this years NHL draft, it's exactly that. The Carlsson pick may have surprised some but it's a pick that could change the course of the franchise.
Carlsson is a powerful and versatile center with great size. He is compared to the likes of Anže Kopitar from the Los Angeles Kings and Kopitar has dominated the league for years. Orange Country Register writer Lisa Dillman shared her thoughts on the pick.
"The drafting of Carlsson could be a turning point, another important piece in their prospect pipeline"
Dillman is spot on with her analysis. Carlsson gives the Ducks a cornerstone player to build around. He has the ability to be an effective player on both sides of the ice and with his size, he can physically punish opposing teams.
Surrounding Carlsson with talent such as Troy Terry, Trevor Zegras, Mason McTavish and others will allow the Ducks to start their rebuild quickly and get back to contention. This will also allow new head coach Greg Cronin's job easier with all the productive players that he will work with.
The future is extremely bright in sunny Orange County and good times are ahead for the Ducks!
