The bruising forward’s signing rights were acquired from the Florida Panthers on Monday.
The Ducks strengthened their bottom-6 on Tuesday, signing A.J. Greer to a four-year contract with an AAV of $4.25 million, per multiple reports. According to TSN and The Athletic’s Pierre LeBrun, Greer’s contract contains a 10-team no trade clause in all four years.
Greer’s signing rights were acquired on Monday from the Florida Panthers in exchange for Radko Gudas’ signing rights. Now that Greer is under contract, he becomes part of a Ducks bottom-6 that will likely consist of Ryan Poehling, Tim Washe and others. Jansen Harkins, Jeff Viel and Ross Johnston all held bottom-6 roles at one point this past season for the Ducks, but all three are pending UFAs, and it’s unclear if any of them will be returning.
With Troy Terry expected to be out until December due to hip impingement surgery, general manager Pat Verbeek will need to make at least one or two more additions to the forward group. It’s possible that 2025 10th overall pick Roger McQueen impressed during training camp and grabs hold of an NHL roster spot, much like Beckett Sennecke did last fall. But as the Ducks trend towards becoming a consistent playoff team, their hopes cannot be pinned on a single player to fill Terry’s void.
Greer was not one of the Panthers’ regular penalty killers, but will likely be called upon to fill that role for the Ducks. Poehling and Alex Killorn proved to be a steady duo on the penalty kill this past season, with Washe supplementing them as the second duo, usually alongside Mikael Granlund. Greer's physicality (over 200 hits in 2024-25 and 2025-26) will also bode well for head coach Joel Quenneville, who values hard checking and physical play from his bottom-6.
