The Boston Bruins re-signed multiple players over the last few days, and this includes goaltender Michael DiPietro. The 26-year-old goalie was eligible to become a Group 6 unrestricted free agent (UFA) on July 1, but the Bruins got him to stick around on a two-year contract with an $812,500 average annual value.

Getting DiPietro re-signed was a no-brainer for Bruins management. The 2017 third-round pick absolutely dominated in the AHL with the Providence Bruins this season, recording a 26-8-5 record, a 2.05 goals-against average, a .927 save percentage, and four shutouts. With this, he won the Aldege "Baz" Bastien Memorial Award as the AHL's top goaltender and was named to the AHL First All-Star Team.

With the Bruins re-signing DiPietro, the next item on their agenda when it comes to their goaltending should be to trade Joonas Korpisalo. DiPietro showed this season down in Providence that he deserves a chance to be Boston's backup, and he could be just that at a significantly lower price than Korpisalo.

Korpisalo, 31, carries a $3 million cap hit until the end of the 2027-28. This is not a cheap contract for a backup like Korpisalo, especially when noting that he struggled with consistency in 2024-25. In 27 games with the Bruins, he had a .893 save percentage and 2.90 goals-against average.

If the Bruins were to trade Korpisalo, it would give them more money to work with to improve their roster elsewhere. The fact of the matter is that they don't need a $11.25 million goalie tandem, especially with Korpisalo getting significantly less starts than Jeremy Swayman. Korpisalo, also, of course, was honest about not being happy about his limited play time this past season.

Overall, with the Bruins having DiPietro re-signed, now seems like the right time to move on from Korpisalo. With this year's goalie market being weak, there could be some interest in him.
