This move is turning out to be a good one for the Bruins.
Back during the 2022-23 season, the Boston Bruins traded former top prospect Jack Studnicka to the Vancouver Canucks in exchange for Michael DiPietro and Jonathan Myrenberg. The move was entirely understandable, as Studnicka could not cement himself a place in Boston's lineup and needed to be placed on waivers to be sent down to the AHL.
With the Canucks, Studnicka had the chance to play more at the NHL level. In 47 games with the Canucks last season, he had four goals and eight points. However, after playing in just five games with Vancouver this season, he was dealt to the San Jose Sharks. Since joining San Jose, he has primarily played in the AHL.
While Studnicka's time in Vancouver is already over, the Bruins still have the potential to benefit from this trade. DiPietro was signed to an extension by the Bruins yesterday (March 21) and is showing great promise with the Providence Bruins. In 26 games, he has a 17-8-0 record, a 2.52 GAA, and a .917 SV%.
With numbers like these, DiPietro is starting to show signs that he could develop into an NHL-caliber goalie. He is still only 24 years old, too, so he has the potential to continue to trend in the right direction.
Myrenberg is also progressing well. The 20-year-old has shown promise in his first full season in the SHL, posting two goals, 11 points, and a plus-7 rating in 50 games with Linkopings HC. Overall, he has been steady defensively and has contributed a bit offensively.
While Myrenberg will need a good amount of time before being ready for the NHL, the possibility of him becoming a bottom-pairing defenseman later down the road is there. It also does not hurt that he is a 6-foot-3, right-shot defenseman. NHL teams always value big, right-shot defensemen.
