On Feb. 27, the Boston Bruins placed forward Oliver Wahlstrom on waivers. It was not particularly surprising, as the 2018 first-round pick had just one goal and one assist in 16 games with the Original Six club before hitting waivers.
After no team claimed Wahlstrom off waivers from the Bruins, he was assigned to their American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, the Providence Bruins. Since then, the 24-year-old winger has been on a real tear with Providence.
In six games since being sent down to Providence, Wahlstrom has six goals. This includes a goal in Providence's last game against the Rochester Americans on March 14. He also recorded a hat trick on March 7 against the Toronto Marlies.
This is exactly the kind of start Wahlstrom needed with Providence, as he was struggling significantly to produce offense while with Boston. Perhaps this hot streak with Providence will now give the Portland, Maine native more confidence moving forward.
Nevertheless, this is certainly a strong way for Wahlstrom to respond to his demotion. If he keeps this kind of play, it could open the door for him to receive another shot on Boston's roster before the season is over. It will be fascinating to see if he can maintain his hot streak with the AHL squad from here.
