The Boston Bruins have brought in many new players this off-season. A good chunk of them are veterans, as Viktor Arvidsson, Tanner Jeannot, and Sean Kuraly have all joined the Bruins. Yet, while this is the case, the Original Six club also added an interesting young player to the depth.
On July 1, the Bruins signed forward Matej Blumel to a one-year, $875,000 contract. While this is one of their smaller signings of the summer, it has the potential to be a good one for Boston.
Blumel is a player who fans should not sleep on, as the 25-year-old forward has had plenty of success at the American Hockey League (AHL) level over the last few seasons. In 2023-24 with the Texas Stars, the 2019 fourth-round pick recorded 31 goals and 62 points in 72 games. He then followed that up by scoring an AHL-best 39 goals and recording 72 points in 67 games with Texas last season. With numbers like these, there is no question that there is some offensive upside there.

Yet, due to the Dallas Stars' extremely strong forward depth, Blumel had trouble becoming a full-time NHL player with them. He played in 13 NHL games with them over the last two seasons, where he scored two goals.
While Blumel did not get too many chances with Dallas, the Bruins should give him a real look on their NHL roster in 2025-26. It is no secret that they need more skill and scoring, and a young player like Blumel could give them that if he can translate some of his excellent AHL offense to the NHL level.
When looking at the Bruins' roster, it is apparent that their depth at right wing is not strong. Because of this, Blumel could have a real chance of playing in Boston's top nine if he puts together a strong training camp. With the way he has played at the AHL level, the retooling Bruins should give him the opportunity to show what he can do at the NHL level. It will be interesting to see if they do just that from here.
